

"Little Red" project
A Mission and Quest Level made in Unreal Editor in Fortnite
Overview
"Little Red" Overview:
"Little Red" is a mission that retells the classic fable "Little Red Riding Hood" in the Fortnite setting, with gameplay and additional story elements. This project covers the first Act of the overall story arc. I was given certain mission guidelines that I had to follow to pass the project.
Below is an overview of some of those guidelines!
Act 1.1 -
"Good morning little red"

The player begins the mission by entering a teleporter that plays a cinematic cutscene afterwards. I had create this cutscene using Unreal level sequencing.

The cutscene itself is a conversation with Little Red and her mother. Mother tasks Little Red with delivering a banana to Grandmother out in the haunted forest. Before doing so, though, Mother asks that Little Red checks on Karl The Farmhand because she heard strange noises coming that way.

Act 1.2 -
"It's Dangerous out there"

The player heads to Karl's farm that is near the village Little Red starts in after the cutscene. They'll find Karl hiding behind some objects, visibly scared, and we must start a conversation with them.

The conversation involves Karl explaining that there's a curse on the land, his cousin, Sven, is missing, and he heard a wolf nearby. At some point during the conversation, a wolf howl SFX will play and a Wolf enemy will spawn soon after.

After the conversation, the player must fight a Wolf enemy that spawns nearby. Once the wolf is defeated, the player's objective is to reach the gate of the haunted forest, kicking off the rest of the gameplay that I had to come up with.


Act 1.2 -
Encounters and ending

The rest of the mission involves crafting encounters that challenge Little Red from getting to the gate of the haunted forest. I was required to make all of these encounters as well as at least 2 non-combat encounters.

At some point during the encounters, I was also required to introduce a new weapon for Little Red, the Makeshift Bow, granting players the ability to fight enemies from a distance.

I also had to include 2 camera events, which were small level sequences that portrayed some kind of event like previewing a encounter or setting up one.

For the end of the level, I had to make a gate that visibly represented the gate to the haunted forest and signified the end of the mission.

Encounters
List OF encounters I made:
Below are the encounters I made for Act 1.2 of the mission and a summary of what each encounter entails!
1st Encounter -
"Lone Wolf"
After having the conversation, the player's face a wolf enemy that spawns nearby. The player is equipped with a Basic Sword and because the wolf is tank enemy, it will take a generous amount of hits to take it out.
2nd Encounter -
"A sCENIC bRIDGE PROBLEM"
After the wolf fight, Little Red then approaches a bridge that is currently blocking her from continuing forth. The player must notice a barricaded cave that is off to side and deduce that they can use their sword to break in. Once they're in, they can pull a switch that will activate the bridge, allowing them to continue forward.
3rd Encounter -
"help a fella out"
After Little Red crosses the bridge, she'll arrive at an abandoned mill and cabin, where two creature spawners will emerge from the ground and start spitting out fiends and ranged fiends. The player will have use their sword to fight back the enemies until the spawners are destroyed based on when a fiend is defeated. Once the enemies are vanquished, the player may continue toward the next area.
4th Encounter -
"From above..."
After the previous encounter, Little Red then approaches an abandoned quarry by riding a mine rail downwards. Upon getting near the quarry, a camera event will play, showing large boulders roll down and wipe the structures around the quarry. The encounter then begins with the player having to get across without getting squashed by a rolling boulder. Once they reach the opposite side, the boulders will cease to fall and the player may move forward.
5th Encounter -
"along we go"
After getting past the rolling boulders, Little Red reaches a slope that reaches the bottom of the mountainous area. Unfortunately, there are some fiends, a poisoned fiend, and some ranged fiends blocking her path. The players must clear the way to get to the bottom, however, they are given some environment advantages like the introduction of plant bombs which they can slap with their sword and it will explode near the closest enemy. Once the path is clear, the player may venture on to the next area.
6th Encounter -
"I have the power!"
After getting to the bottom of the mountain, Little Red must now enter the more dangerous part of the land via a cryptic ravine. Upon entering, the player will face their first fairy enemy, who can attack from a distance with a bow. The player will have to avoid incoming arrows as they get closer to finish the fairy off with their sword. After defeating the lone fairy, the player is rewarded with the makeshift bow, but upon pickup, a camera event plays, signaling an ambush on the player! 5 fairies surround them and the player must use their new weapon AND the environment to survive. Once the ambush is over, the player may press on forward.
7th Encounter -
"Hold the line!"
After the ambush, Little Red will arrive at an abandoned mine shaft. The player will find a torch near a collapsed tunnel that has gunpowder barrels nearby. Using the torch, the player will ignite the barrels and initiate the encounter which is to defend the area for 45 seconds and the tunnel will open afterwards. Within that time, poisoned fiends, fiends, ranged fiends, and fairies will spawn infinitely until the timer ends. The player can find ammo bags and exploding plants within the environment to help with the encounter. Once the timer is up, the tunnel explodes and the path is open to the next encounter.
8th Encounter -
"One final effort"
After making it past the defense encounter, Little Red will arrive at the final stretch of the mission. However, it's her biggest challenge yet, grinding mine rails and avoiding income objects! The player will be sent through twists and turns of the mine shaft that has been overflowed with lava and must jump to different rails in order to avoid objects or falling to their death. Once past that, the player will run out of rail and plummet into the mouth of a giant skull, saved by a running river. The river takes the player towards the gate of the haunted forest and once the player reaches the teleporter just outside, the mission will conclude.
